Our Story
Duck Duck Pig began in 2019 with Nikki, Nikki’s Partner Sam and Sister Toni started succession planning their 300 acre, third generation family farm. The land had originally been used solely for cattle production but with limited infrastructure, limited road front as well as a large portion of the land being hilly and rocky it meant significant conversation was needed when trying to decide what we wanted to do moving forwards.
We wanted to “farm” something we enjoyed and were passionate about if possible as well as making it as fun a process. Cliche as it may be; we wanted to enjoy the journey. We did our research and the catalyst for our first move was when “Poppy” (Nikki and Toni’s Dad) suggested that he had previously had an agronomist come to the farm who told him “you will never grow anything in your soil; its shit!” That caused Sam to google the exact term “what grows in shit soil?” And the rest is history…
Truffles
In mid 2021 we planted a hectare of 400 french oak trees inoculated with black french truffle (Also known as Perigord truffles or tuber melanosporum). This planting had ran alongside a program of soil preparation, putting in irrigation, laying weed-mat (which we would discourage anyone to do – awful stuff) as well as general maintenance associated with growing on farm for the previous year.
4 years later in 2025 and we have harvested our first truffles with the help of Gravy, our Lagotto Romagnolo Truffle Dog. Since then we have harvested a number of truffles and we are getting excited for our yield to improve and the commercial opportunities that will bring as well as hosting on farm truffle hunts.
Gravy our truffle dog now contracts out to other truffle farms and is going from strength to strength as a hunter. We also recently had the opportunity to adopt 2 of her sisters Millie and Beth meaning our truffle hunting “Squadron” now sits at 3; although the 2 new additions still are on their L plates.
Cut Flowers
After planting our truffle trees, 4 years seemed a long time to sit on our hands so we started a “let’s see what survives in our soil” experiment which led to us planting a test patch of Australian Natives as well as some South African wildflower varieties like proteas.
These flowers thrived in our trial patch, proving tougher (and prettier) than we imagined. The need for low water and the low work requirements of a perrenial compared to an annual meant they sat perfectly alongside our business plan and philosophy.
Today, our cut flowers are grown chemical-free, with the seasons calling the shots. Fresh, local, and never boring – they are available from Feb through to December.
Events & Workshops
We are so lucky to operate Duck Duck Pig and live and work on this land so it was a no brainer to open it up to people and share it. So we have opened up the farm gates and inviting everyone in. From truffle hunts to flower workshops, farm walking tours tours to hands-on sessions, Duck Duck Pig is now beyond delivering just produce. Think muddy boots, fresh flowers, good laughs, and maybe a glass of something local at the end. Our events are designed to share what we’ve learned, celebrate seasonality, and connect people with the land. Our spaces are also available for rent for private functions.
